What is the NIE and why do we renew the TIE?

It is a common error to confuse the NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) with the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card). The NIE is simply an alphanumeric code assigned to you for life; this number never expires.

What actually expires and needs renewal is the physical plastic, that is, the TIE. This card is the document that proves you have a legal authorization to reside or work in Spain. Keeping this document valid is vital to:

Download form 790-012. Go to a banking institution (or compatible ATM) to make the payment. This step must be done BEFORE going to the appointment at the police station.

4. Card Collection

After a waiting period (usually 30-45 days), you must return to the police station to collect your new TIE. Don't forget to bring the original receipt and your passport.

Common Errors to Avoid

1. Not requesting the appointment in advance

In cities like Barcelona or Madrid, appointments can take weeks to appear. Start looking 60 days before expiration.

2. Paying the wrong fee

There are variations between temporary and long-term residence fees. Verify your situation before paying.

3. Expired or about to expire passport

In certain cases, your NIE cannot be issued for a period longer than the validity of your passport. Renew it first if necessary.

4. Forgetting physical copies

Even if many procedures are digitized, for fingerprinting you will be required to provide printed copies of everything. Don't risk being denied service.

Frequently Asked Questions about Renewal

What happens if my NIE has already expired?
You have a margin of 90 calendar days to request renewal. However, during that time you could receive a financial penalty and might have problems traveling or performing banking transactions. If more than 90 days pass, you fall into an irregular situation.
Can I renew my NIE without a work contract?
It depends on your type of residence. If it is residency for work, you might need to prove you have worked a minimum number of months or that you have a new offer. If it is long-term residence, you do not need a work contract to renew the TIE.
How long does it take for the new card to arrive?
Once you give your fingerprints, document manufacturing usually takes between 30 and 45 days, depending on the workload of the National Currency and Stamp Factory (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre).
Can I travel with the renewal receipt?
No. The receipt is not a valid travel document outside Spain. If you need to travel abroad while your card is being processed, you must request a Return Authorization (Autorización de Regreso).
What is long-term NIE?
It is the authorization you obtain after residing legally for 5 years in Spain. This card is renewed every 5 years and the process is much simpler than temporary renewals. Check the requirements at Permanent Residence.
How do I request a prior appointment if none are available?
This is the biggest current challenge. It is recommended to enter the system on Mondays at 8:00 or 9:00 AM, which is when new appointments are usually released. If it is urgent, you can contact specialized administrative agencies (gestorías).
Can I renew online?
The residence authorization renewal application can indeed be done online through the MERCURIO platform with a Digital Certificate. However, the physical card issuance (fingerprinting) is always in person.
Is it necessary to bring medical insurance?
It is mandatory for students, non-lucrative residences, and reunifications. If you work for an employer, your coverage by Social Security is usually sufficient.
Do I have to register (empadronarme) again?
Only if you have changed address since your last card was issued. If you are still at the same address, it is not necessary to provide a new registration (empadronamiento) certificate, although it is recommended to bring one just in case.
What happens if my renewal is denied?
You can file an administrative appeal (recurso de alzada) or a contentious-administrative appeal within one month. In these cases, it is highly recommended to hire an expert immigration lawyer.
