NIE and TIE Renewal
in Spain: Step by Step
Secure your legal status in Spain. Discover how to renew your residence card, avoid penalties, and manage your documentation 100% online or in person.
NIE or TIE? The crucial difference you must know
It is the most common error among foreigners in Spain. The NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) is a personal, unique, and exclusive number of a sequential nature assigned for administrative purposes. Once assigned, the NIE never expires.
What you actually renew is the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card), which is the physical document that proves your legal residence. Keeping this document valid is vital for working, traveling, and accessing public services without interruptions.
"Remember: The NIE is the number (like the ID), the TIE is the plastic that has an expiration date."
General Requirements for Renewal
Before starting the process, make sure you meet the basic criteria required by the Immigration Office.
Application Deadlines
You can request the renewal during the 60 calendar days prior to the expiration date. It is also allowed within the 90 days after, although the latter could lead to an administrative fine of up to €500. Submitting the application within the period extends the validity of your previous authorization until the resolution of the procedure.
Legal Status
You must not have a criminal record in Spain or in your previous countries of residence for offenses existing in the Spanish legal system. Additionally, you must not be prohibited from entering the national territory.
Financial Support
Depending on your type of residence (temporary, through work, reunification), you must demonstrate that you still have sufficient financial means or a valid employment contract.
Healthcare
It is mandatory to have guaranteed healthcare in Spain, either through Social Security (if you work) or through private medical insurance without co-payments or waiting periods if you are a student or non-lucrative resident.

Necessary Documentation
Having a complete file is the key to a quick favorable resolution. Don't forget to bring originals and copies of everything.
Official EX Form
Depending on your case (EX-11 for long-term, EX-03 for work as an employee, etc.). It must be signed and in duplicate.
Full Passport
Original and copy of ALL pages, even blank ones. It must be valid.
Fee 790
Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (052 for residence, 012 for the physical card). Paid at a bank.
Census Registration
Only if you have changed your address. The empadronamiento certificate must be less than 3 months old.
Proof of Means
Employment contract, employment record, or bank statements showing solvency.
Health Insurance
Policy and latest paid receipt if you do not contribute to Social Security.
How do you want to carry out the procedure?
Online Method
The fastest and most recommended method in 2026. Avoid appointments and queues.
- • You need a Digital Certificate.
- • 24/7 submission on the MERCURIO platform.
- • Instant electronic notifications.
In Person
For those who prefer direct contact or do not have digital means.
- • Requires an Appointment (mandatory).
- • Presentation at the Immigration Office.
- • Immediate review of original documents.
Postal Mail
A legal option but less efficient than the previous ones.
- • Sent via Certified Mail (Administrative).
- • You must keep the receipt stamped by the Post Office.
- • Longer response times.
Can I continue working while I wait?
Yes. Spanish regulations establish that the submission of the renewal application within the legal deadlines (60 days before or 90 days after) extends the validity of the previous authorization until the procedure is definitively resolved.
This means that your labor rights, access to social security, and your legal residence remain "in force" legally, even if your physical card shows a past date. The document that proves it is the application receipt with the file number.
Loss or Theft of NIE/TIE
If you have lost your card or it has been stolen, you do not need to "renew" it in the strict sense if it was still valid, but rather request a duplicate. The steps are:
- Report: Go to the nearest National Police or Civil Guard station to report the fact. Keep the original report.
- Appointment: Request an appointment for "Duplicate Foreigner Identity Card" in the province where you reside.
- Documents: Bring your passport, the report, form EX-17, 3 recent photos, and proof of payment of fee 790 (approx. €19 - €21).
Attention: If your card was going to expire in less than 90 days, it is better to directly request renewal rather than a duplicate, to avoid two consecutive procedures.
