What you should know today
Executive summary of the renewal process for residents in Spain.
Critical Deadlines
The law allows starting the renewal 60 days before your card expires. You also have 90 calendar days after, although the latter may involve a financial penalty. Do not wait until the last day.
Fee 790-012
The payment of the official fee is mandatory. Make sure to select the correct code according to your current type of residence.
Form EX-17
The official form for the issuance of the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE). Essential for your in-person appointment.
Empadronamiento
If you have changed address, you need an updated certificate less than 3 months old.
Prior Appointment
Mandatory in almost all provinces (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, etc.) through the Electronic Office.
What is the NIE and why do we renew the TIE?
It is a common error to confuse the NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) with the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card). The NIE is simply an alphanumeric code assigned to you for life; this number never expires.
What actually expires and needs renewal is the physical plastic, that is, the TIE. This card is the document that proves you have a legal authorization to reside or work in Spain. Keeping this document valid is vital to:
- ● Maintain your Social Security registration and your work contract.
- ● Travel outside Spain and be able to re-enter legally.
- ● Perform banking procedures or renew your rental contract.
- ● Apply for Spanish nationality by residence in the future.

The Process Step by Step
1. Verification and Appointment
Check the expiration date. Enter the Electronic Office of Public Administrations and request a prior appointment in the "Fingerprints (Card Issuance)" module. If you have a Digital Certificate, some previous residence steps can be done online.
2. Payment of Fees
Download form 790-012. Go to a banking institution (or compatible ATM) to make the payment. This step must be done BEFORE going to the appointment at the police station.
3. Fingerprinting
Go in person to the Police Station or Immigration Office. Hand in all documentation. The official will record your fingerprints and give you the "Foreigner Identity Card Application Receipt".
4. Card Collection
After a waiting period (usually 30-45 days), you must return to the police station to collect your new TIE. Don't forget to bring the original receipt and your passport.
Common Errors to Avoid
1. Not requesting the appointment in advance
In cities like Barcelona or Madrid, appointments can take weeks to appear. Start looking 60 days before expiration.
2. Paying the wrong fee
There are variations between temporary and long-term residence fees. Verify your situation before paying.
3. Expired or about to expire passport
In certain cases, your NIE cannot be issued for a period longer than the validity of your passport. Renew it first if necessary.
4. Forgetting physical copies
Even if many procedures are digitized, for fingerprinting you will be required to provide printed copies of everything. Don't risk being denied service.
