NIE and TIE Renewal
in Spain: Step by Step

Secure your legal status in Spain. Discover how to renew your residence card, avoid penalties, and manage your documentation 100% online or in person.

NIE or TIE? The crucial difference you must know

It is the most common error among foreigners in Spain. The NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) is a personal, unique, and exclusive number of a sequential nature assigned for administrative purposes. Once assigned, the NIE never expires.

What you actually renew is the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card), which is the physical document that proves your legal residence. Keeping this document valid is vital for working, traveling, and accessing public services without interruptions.

"Remember: The NIE is the number (like the ID), the TIE is the plastic that has an expiration date."

General Requirements for Renewal

Before starting the process, make sure you meet the basic criteria required by the Immigration Office.

Application Deadlines

You can request the renewal during the 60 calendar days prior to the expiration date. It is also allowed within the 90 days after, although the latter could lead to an administrative fine of up to €500. Submitting the application within the period extends the validity of your previous authorization until the resolution of the procedure.

Legal Status

You must not have a criminal record in Spain or in your previous countries of residence for offenses existing in the Spanish legal system. Additionally, you must not be prohibited from entering the national territory.

Financial Support

Depending on your type of residence (temporary, through work, reunification), you must demonstrate that you still have sufficient financial means or a valid employment contract.

Healthcare

It is mandatory to have guaranteed healthcare in Spain, either through Social Security (if you work) or through private medical insurance without co-payments or waiting periods if you are a student or non-lucrative resident.

Necessary Documentation

Having a complete file is the key to a quick favorable resolution. Don't forget to bring originals and copies of everything.

Stationery and documents
01.

Official EX Form

Depending on your case (EX-11 for long-term, EX-03 for work as an employee, etc.). It must be signed and in duplicate.

02.

Full Passport

03.

Postal Mail

A legal option but less efficient than the previous ones.

  • • Sent via Certified Mail (Administrative).
  • • You must keep the receipt stamped by the Post Office.
  • • Longer response times.
Not recommended in 2026

Can I continue working while I wait?

Yes. Spanish regulations establish that the submission of the renewal application within the legal deadlines (60 days before or 90 days after) extends the validity of the previous authorization until the procedure is definitively resolved.

This means that your labor rights, access to social security, and your legal residence remain "in force" legally, even if your physical card shows a past date. The document that proves it is the application receipt with the file number.

Loss or Theft of NIE/TIE

If you have lost your card or it has been stolen, you do not need to "renew" it in the strict sense if it was still valid, but rather request a duplicate. The steps are:

  1. Report: Go to the nearest National Police or Civil Guard station to report the fact. Keep the original report.
  2. Appointment: Request an appointment for "Duplicate Foreigner Identity Card" in the province where you reside.
  3. Documents: Bring your passport, the report, form EX-17, 3 recent photos, and proof of payment of fee 790 (approx. €19 - €21).

Attention: If your card was going to expire in less than 90 days, it is better to directly request renewal rather than a duplicate, to avoid two consecutive procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the NIE resolution take?
Legally, the administration has 3 months to resolve. If there is no response in that time, in many cases of residence renewal, "Positive Administrative Silence" applies, meaning it is considered granted. However, it usually takes between 45 and 90 days.
Can I travel outside of Spain with an expired NIE?
You cannot travel with only the expired card. You need to request a Return Authorization (Autorización de Regreso) at the police station before leaving the country. This authorization allows you to re-enter Spain legally while your renewal is in progress.
Is the digital certificate mandatory?
It is not mandatory (you can go in person), but it is highly recommended. In 2026, most immigration offices are overwhelmed and getting an appointment can be an odyssey. The digital certificate allows you to do it from home in 10 minutes.
Exactly which fee should I pay?
For temporary residence renewal, it is usually Fee 790 code 052, section 2.2 (approx. €16.40). For a long-term card, it is the same fee but another section. Always check the updated amount on the official website.
What happens if my renewal is denied?
You have one month to file an Administrative Appeal (Recurso de Alzada) or two months for a Contentious-Administrative Appeal. We strongly recommend contacting a lawyer specialized in immigration if this happens.
Can I renew if I am unemployed?
Yes, as long as you are receiving an unemployment benefit or demonstrate that you have been actively seeking employment. The time you have previously worked counts toward the renewal.
Do I have to present a criminal record certificate from my country?
Generally, for residence renewals that have already been granted previously, only the criminal record in Spain is checked. However, in cases of permanent residence, Immigration checks it automatically in its databases.
I have changed bosses, does it affect my renewal?
No, as long as you continue working in the same sector or meet the minimum contribution requirements for your type of permit.
