Definitive Guide:
First NIE Application in Spain

Everything you need to know to obtain your Foreigner Identity Number quickly, legally, and without administrative errors. Step-by-step guide for non-EU citizens.

What really is the NIE and why is it mandatory?

The Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) is a personal, unique, and exclusive number that the Directorate General of Police assigns to foreigners. It is the cornerstone of your legal life in Spain in this 2026. Without this number, common activities such as opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, or registering with Social Security are legally impossible.

Tax Identification

It is your identification number for the Tax Agency. Essential for completing Form 030 and fulfilling your tax obligations.

Economic Activity

Necessary to create a company or register as self-employed in Spain to legally invoice for services.

Studies and Health

Required to enroll in universities, validate degrees, and access the public health system using a Social Security Number.

Critical Differences you should know

NIE vs TIE: The most common error

Many foreigners confuse the two terms. The NIE is the number (e.g., X1234567-Z), while the TIE is the physical plastic card that contains your photo and fingerprint. Obtaining the NIE is the first step, but to reside legally for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE).

Difference between documents

Does the NIE expire?

The NIE number is for life. It never changes. What expires is the associated residence authorization or the physical card (TIE).

Visa

The visa is applied for in the country of origin. Upon arriving in Spain, if your stay is long, the visa usually already includes your NIE number printed on it.

Mandatory Documentation (2026 List)

Leave nothing to chance. The Immigration Office is strict with the format of documents. Any error in the form or missing a copy can mean the denial of your appointment and months of delay.

1

Form EX-15

You must submit it in duplicate, duly completed and signed. It is the specific model for NIE assignment for non-residents.

2

Full Passport

Original and copy of EVERY page of the passport, even blank pages. It must be valid (at least 6 months).

3

Justification of Reason

Document certifying why you need the NIE: university acceptance letter, housing reservation contract, job offer, etc.

4

Fee 790 Code 012

Proof of having paid the corresponding fee at the bank before going to the appointment. The amount varies slightly each year.

Processing from abroad?

If you are not in Spain yet, you can apply for the NIE at the Consulate or Embassy of Spain in your current country of residence. The process is similar but delivery times may be longer (from 2 to 4 weeks by post).

Expert Tip:

Make sure all foreign documents are duly apostilled (Hague Convention) and translated by a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Careful! The 5 errors that ruin your NIE

Choosing "Fingerprinting" (Toma de Huellas)

This is error #1. NIE assignment is NOT fingerprinting. If you choose incorrectly, you will be rejected at the door.

Expired or unstamped passport

Your passport must have an entry stamp for Spain or the Schengen area if you come from a country without direct border control.

Not having Local Registration (Empadronamiento)

Although technically not always mandatory for a non-resident NIE, many offices require it in practice. Check our guide on local registration.

Frequently Asked Questions about the NIE

How long does it take to receive the NIE?

In most Spanish provinces (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia), the number is given to you on white paper at the same moment of the appointment or within 3-5 business days if they ask you to return to collect it.

Can I work with a non-resident NIE?

No. The NIE is only an identification number. To work, you need a residence and work authorization. The NIE allows you to sign the contract, but it does not activate your legal right to work.

What happens if I lose my NIE document?

Don't worry. The number is unchangeable. You can request a duplicate by booking a new appointment or consult it if you already have a Digital Certificate.

Do I have to renew the NIE?

The number does NOT renew. What is renewed is the TIE card or the legal stay permit in the country. See the details in NIE Renewal.

Can I buy a house only with the NIE?

Yes. It is the primary requirement for foreign investors. It allows you to pay taxes and register the property in the Land Registry.
