Legal Advice in Spain

Legalization and Apostille of Academic Documents

If you have obtained a university degree or a master's in Spain and need it to be valid abroad, or vice versa, the legalization process is essential. This procedure certifies the authenticity of the signatures and the capacity in which the signing authority has acted.

The Hague Convention (Apostille)

For member countries of the 1961 Hague Convention, the procedure is simplified through the "Apostille". This is a unique stamp that validates the document without the need for additional diplomatic or consular legalizations. In Spain, the responsible bodies vary depending on the document:

  • Judicial Documents: Government Secretaries of the High Courts of Justice.
  • Notarial Documents: Notarial Colleges.
  • Administrative Documents: Ministry of Justice (Territorial Managements).

For countries not signatory to the Hague Convention, the process is more complex and includes legalization at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and subsequently at the consular representation of the destination country in Spain.
