Transition to the Unique Civil Registry: A Paradigm Shift
Formerly, the Civil Registry functioned through physical "volumes" and "folios" distributed in each local court. This made requesting a duplicate or an update a slow process that often required physical travel.
With the full implementation of Law 20/2011, Spain has moved to an Individual Registry model. What does this mean?
- Personal Code: Each person is assigned a unique code at their first registration (birth).
- Unique Sheet: All the events of your civil life (marriage, divorce, nationality) are recorded chronologically in your personal record.
- Interoperability: The Tax Office, Social Security, and the General Directorate of Police can consult your family data without you having to carry the physical book in your hand.
